How this tip calculator works
Bill, tip percentage, and split
Restaurant and café tipping customs vary by country, but the maths is the same: choose a tip percentage of the bill, add that tip to get a total, and optionally divide the bill or the tipped total among people sharing the cost.
Enter the bill amount and tip percent to see tip amount and total with tip. If you set a party size greater than one, the page also shows each person’s share of the tipped total and of the pre-tip bill.
Formulas
- Tip amount = bill × tip% ÷ 100
- Total with tip = bill + tip amount
- Per person (with tip) = total with tip ÷ people
- Per person (bill only) = bill ÷ people
Worked example
A $80 bill with a 15% tip means tip = 80 × 0.15 = $12, total = $92. Split four ways: about $23.00 each including tip, or $20.00 each on the bill alone if tip is handled separately.
Custom and local practice
Typical tip rates differ: some places round up, include service, or tip on pre-tax amounts only. This calculator does not look up local customs — pick the percent that matches how you want to tip. Tax-inclusive bills and “service compris” menus may already include a service charge; check the receipt before adding another tip.
Common mistakes
- Tipping on the post-discount total when a voucher was meant to apply first.
- Forgetting that splitting “evenly” may still need cash rounding.
- Double-tipping when a service charge is already listed.
FAQs
- Should tip include tax?
- Follow local habit. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; others tip on the final total. Enter whichever base you intend.
- Can I convert currency first?
- Yes — convert with Pick Two Currencies, then tip on that amount.
